Red Flower Day: 1 July 1997

Red Flower Day '97

1 July 1997 – the day that the cuts to the operational subsidy for community based long day care came in was marked by ‘Red Flower Day’ in the ACT.

Here we are out the front of Parliament House, taking a stand against childcare cuts.
The flowers (hundreds of them) are on display in my electorate office window,
located at 11 London Circuit, Civic.Red Flower Day 97
Children, parents and childcare workers all made red flowers to bring along to the public meeting, which was held in the Main Committee Room at Parliament House.

Red Flower Day: 1 July – Your chance to take a stand against childcare cuts

As a result of the May 1997 childcare summit, a working party has been formed to lead the campaign to oppose the cuts to childcare. The cuts to childcare threaten the standard and diversity of quality care and places limitations on the choices available to families.

Where: Main Committee Room
            Parliament House

When:
Tuesday, July 1, 1997
Time:
12pm to 1.30pm
Why:
We have decided to take
action.

We need your support at a public meeting to show our opposition to cuts by the Liberal Government to childcare.

These cuts total $821 million over the last 18 months.

We will be joining the Australian Council of Trade Union’s (ACTU) National Day of Action – every state will be participating.

The red flowers symbolise our stand.

We need your contribution to make an impact. Even if you cannot attend the meeting, the more red flowers we have, the greater the impact. We need each child care service to participate by sending as many representatives as possible (WORKERS, PARENTS AND ANY OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES) with as many red flowers as possible, preferably signed by the parents, relatives, friends, children & workers.
