Radio Kate: Migration Bill

Transcript

This Migration Bill represents a serious test of credibility and values of members of the Howard Government.

It is a test Senators like Gary Humphries will fail if he supports this Bill, because that will prove he and others have abandoned principles they claim to have held twelve months ago.

These principles meant that: children would not be detained; people would not be detained indefinitely, and people should not pay the price of their sanity because of their mental health conditions.

The Howard Government’s ruthless treatment of vulnerable people exposes the weak character of the Prime Minister and Coalition members.

How can these hypocrites agree that it is wrong to detain children in Australia, yet turn a blind eye and facilitate this on Nauru?

I, and the Labor Party, will continue to fight for these principles: if people flee persecution then from the moment they arrive in Australian hands, this persecution should end.

    Kate

This is one issue on which the ALP is almost unassailably correct. I am disappointed however that there continues to be undercurrent of dog whistle references to the extremely low common denominator of racism and/or intolerance of certain religions on a knee jerk basis. Stop joining Howard in that gutter.

I thank SMH for getting many people to be in touch with one of our politicians who has opened her door on the web. Good on you Kate and keep the good work up.
I’d also like to hear your support on public education and more funding for the TAFE system from our Federal government. Australia’s future relies on equitable access to education for all.
