$592,402 to support community programs in Canberra

Senator for the ACT, Kate Lundy welcomed the Australian Government’s announcement by Families Minister, Jenny Macklin of $592,402 in funding for four community projects in Canberra.

ACT Playgroup Association, Belconnen Community Services, Communities@Work and Barnados Australia (Canberra Centre) are among service providers across the country to receive funding totalling $52 million.

This funding will cover a two year period from July 2009 to June 2011 as family, parenting and children programs transition fully to the new Family Support Program.

The projects funded in the ACT include a playgroup program, mentoring program for disadvantaged children, parenting support program and a child care link program.

“This additional funding will support these services to continue working with families in Canberra,” Senator Lundy said.

“The work done by these services aims to build strong, resilient families where children can grow up safe, well and happy.”

The Government is restructuring the existing, fragmented collection of family, parenting and children programs into one integrated whole – the new Family Support Program.

The new Family Support Program will deliver a consistent and coordinated approach to supporting Australian families as their children grow, and as their families change.
