Pipe Dreams: A Vision for a Connected Australia will be the topic of a seminar at the University of Canberra on Thursday 21 May. The seminar will focus discussion on the potential impacts of the National Broadband Network (NBN) on Australian communities.
Key note speaker, Senator Kate Lundy, recently launched ‘Public Sphere: Higher Bandwidth for Australia’, enabling people from all around Australia to participate in an online public sphere to create discussion on regular topics of interest to both the general public and government.
University of Canberra lecturer in Government-Business Relations, Michael de Percy believes the forthcoming NBN will provide opportunities for Australia to become a more open and innovative society.
“We are only just beginning to grasp the significance of broadband technologies, but their impact on many industries is already beginning to tell. Many Australians may not realise the potential uses for broadband technologies, and there is a need for a variety of uses to be demonstrated beyond simply entertainment. The potential for innovation is only limited by our imaginations,” Mr de Percy said.
Speakers will outline their vision of how access to high-speed broadband will affect all Australians, and include Professor Keith Lyons on connecting communities and Michael de Percy on changing the rules of the game.
The media are invited to attend the seminar.
