Community Grants to curb youth binge drinking in ACT now open

Kate Lundy, Labor Senator for the ACT encourages community groups in Canberra and surrounds to apply for Community Level Initiative funding up to $3.6 million to tackle binge drinking in our Territory.

As part of the Government’s National Binge Drinking Strategy, this funding aims to prevent and reduce binge drinking among young people, specifically in the age group 12-24 years.

“Binge drinking among young people is a community-wide problem, not only in the ACT, but across Australia, and it needs a community-wide response,” Senator Lundy said.

“The aim of this funding is to build environments that shape healthier cultures and reduce binge drinking among young people.”

This second round of community-based grants will provide support to establish sustainable partnerships between non-government organisations, local government, sporting groups, police and interested parties to work together to develop local solutions for youth binge drinking within their own community.

Grants of up to $150,000 are available for individual project proposals to be paid over two years.  For organisations wishing to collaborate and submit a combined proposal, an upper limit of $250,000 is available, over two years.

“Innovative projects that have links to other organisations and embody a whole of community approach to address binge drinking are most likely to be successful.”

An evaluation of local projects funded in these rounds will assist in building future nation-wide program designs.

Organisations interested in applying must address the selection criteria in the format outlined in the application form, which can be obtained by registering online at the Department of Health and Ageing’s Tenders and Grants internet site at www.health.gov.au/tenders
