Senator for the ACT, Kate Lundy has welcomed action by the ACT Chief Minister and Local Government Minister Anthony Albanese for necessary assessments of bridges along four priority freight routes within the ACT.
The Federal Labor Government is providing $550,000 towards the project through its Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program. This funding is being matched by the ACT Government.
The project will identify bridges which can carry Higher Mass Limit vehicles, such as 45.5 tonne semi-trailers, and strengthen non-compliant bridges through design improvements.
The States and Territories will soon be invited to apply for the Program’s remaining funding of $40 million.
The following freight routes have already been selected for repairs:
- Northbourne Avenue: 3 bridge assessments;
- Pialligo Avenue: 5 bridge assessments;
- Majura Road: 12 bridge assessments;
- Monaro Highway: 25 bridge assessments.
“These projects will deliver better and safer driving conditions along three priority freight routes in the ACT and will support local jobs,” Senator Lundy said.
