Senator for the ACT Kate Lundy is today presenting Trinity Christian School winner in the Australian Government’s Anzac Day Schools’ Awards their certificate.
Senator Lundy said the awards encourage school students to learn about Australia’s wartime heritage and to develop innovative ways to commemorate the service and sacrifice of our servicemen and women each Anzac Day.
As part of their entry, Trinity Christian School students searched the Australian War Memorial website for the service details of relatives and ancestors who had served in the Australian armed forces.
“A PowerPoint presentation was produced comprising photographs of veterans of various conflicts and current serving ADF members along with photographs of Trinity Christian School pupils who are their descendants or relatives – highlighting a meaningful link between the two,” Senator Lundy said.
“The presentation was shown during the school’s Anzac Day service and pupils’ families contributed family members’ medals and personal effects for display during the service.”
As the Primary School category winner in the ACT, Senator Lundy said Trinity Christian School has won $1,000 and a commemorative plaque.
St Clare’s College was the Secondary School category winner in the ACT and also has won $1,000 and a commemorative plaque.
“I congratulate Trinity Christian School and St Clare’s College for their exceptional efforts in remembering and honouring Australians who served in wars and conflicts,” Senator Lundy said.
The Anzac Day Schools’ Awards are funded under the Australian Government’s Saluting Their Service Commemorations program, administered by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
This year 21 schools shared $22,500 in prize money for their efforts. Primary and secondary school winners were selected in each state and territory, and from those winning entries, the national winners were selected. Five special category prizes were also awarded.
“I encourage all our local schools to enter the competition in 2010. In developing an entry, the entire school community can benefit from learning more about Australia’s wartime experiences and the value of connecting with our remaining veterans,” Senator Lundy said.
