No Commonwealth veto over ACT Assembly re: Civil Partnerships!

Senator for the ACT Kate Lundy, Member for Canberra Annette Ellis and Member for Fraser Bob McMullan have welcomed the Commonwealth Government’s decision not to override the ACT Assembly in relation to the ACT’s Civil Partnerships Act.

The agreement reached between the two governments is a significant achievement.

The agreement maintains ceremonies in the Act but ensures that registration is an essential requirement for the official recognition of all civil partnerships under the ACT scheme. This ensures a nationally consistent approach.

The decision also represents respect from the Commonwealth Government for the ability of the elected ACT Government to legislate for its own jurisdiction.

“The agreement reached represents a tremendous step forward for same sex couples across the Territory,” the local Federal representatives said.
