Unions supporting the Samoan Tsunami victims

The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU), Transport Workers Union (TWU) and Maritime Workers Union (MUA) are working together with the Canberra Raiders and Senator Kate Lundy to bring relief to the victims of the Samoan Tsunami.

The ACT Samoan community has been collecting donations of money and material to assist in the rebuilding effort. The Unions have stepped in to arrange for a shipping container to transport these donations to be sent to Apia, Samoa to arrive before Christmas.

The MUA has arranged a 40 foot shipping container and priority access for this important cargo at a very busy time of year. The TWU has arranged for the container to be brought to Canberra and returned to the port and the CFMEU, with the help of Senator Kate Lundy and ACTEW, has raised enough money cover the costs.

“This is another example of the Union movement’s dedication to social justice and helping a mate” said Sarah Schoonwater, Secretary CFMEU (ACT Branch). “The Samoan community has made a huge contribution to the Canberra community and we wanted to make sure that we helped them out in their time of need.”

“This contribution from the MUA, TWU and the CFMEU – together with the Canberra Samoan community – will help those devastated by the tsunami in September this year. This terrible tragedy has brought the community closer than ever, and we are pleased that can play some role in rebuilding their proud and beautiful country.”

Senator Kate Lundy, Canberra Raider Daniel Vidot, Sarah Schoonwater with help from the CFMEU and the Samoan community will be loading the shipping container at 36 Hirschfeld Cres, Macgregor at 9:00am on Thursday 3 December.

Media are welcome to film the event and interview the attendees.

For additional comment, Samoan community spokesperson Tama Tasolo is available on 0414 877 237.
