ACT recognition in National Work-Life Balance Awards

Senator for the ACT, Kate Lundy has today congratulated ACT small business Take A Break Away Pty Ltd, one of the 2009-10 national winners of the National Work-Life Balance Awards.

The Awards recognise businesses and government and community organisations that are leading the way in delivering policies, practices and initiatives that help people balance their work and family commitments.

TakeABreak.com.au is a website that helps people to find and book holiday accommodation.

From day one TakeABreak’s founders aimed to create a great place to work with genuine flexibility and work-life balance. The company’s smart IT systems are designed to create as much flexibility as possible with options for working remotely, and the management team leads from the front in using and supporting flexible practices. TakeABreak has found this approach enables the staff to enjoy their work and focus their energy on contributing to the business.

The Award winners were selected by a Judging Panel that included representatives from Diversity Council Australia, the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Business Council of Australia, the Australian Council of Trade Unions and the Centre for Work + Life (University of South Australia) and recognise family friendly practices like flexible working hours, options for working from homes, paid parental leave, job sharing, onsite carer’s facilities and study assistance.

“It is great to see an ACT small business one of the national leaders in successfully integrating work-life balance practices whilst managing business demands.

“I congratulate TakeABreak on their achievement and encourage other ACT businesses to get involved in this fantastic initiative,” Senator Lundy said.

Further assistance for small businesses to implement family friendly work practices is available through grants of up to $15,000 under the Fresh Ideas for Work and Family Program.

The initiative is one of the measurers under the Government’s Fresh Ideas for Work and Family policy commitment.
