Senator for the ACT Kate Lundy and Labor Candidate for Fraser, Andrew Leigh, today welcomed the Gillard Government’s announcement that Centrelink and Medicare Australia services will be offered side by side in Gungahlin by mid-2011 to increase convenience and accessibility.
“This is good news for the Gungahlin community, as it means you will be able to access a full range of Centrelink and Medicare services in one handy location,” Dr Leigh said.
“I am sure that locals will welcome the added convenience this one-stop shop will bring.”
The co-location initiative is part of the Government’s service delivery reform agenda, which aims to simplify the way people deal with Government.
This change means customers will be able to update all their details in one place when their circumstances change.
Gungahlin is one of 21 sites to offer both Centrelink and Medicare services by mid-2011.
The co-location will be achieved by Medicare moving to the existing Centrelink site, which is Shop 33 in the Gungahlin Marketplace.
“The Australian Government’s service delivery reform is delivering some very practical and useful enhancements which are making a real difference for people who are accessing services,” Senator Lundy said.
“Importantly, this co-location will not involve any reduction of staffing numbers.”
“This is just a very simple, effective and practical step by government and should make things easier for the people of Gungahlin,” Dr Leigh said.
