NBN, bringing real broadband to the Gungahlin area
Fact sheet
NBN Co are embarking upon the next phase of the fibre to the premises (FTTP) broadband rollouts across Australia, and Gungahlin is one of 14 new sites chosen to have the fibre Internet rolled out mid next year.
Why Gungahlin:
NBN Co looked at a range of criteria which included network design, the interest and engagement of the community and the level of existing infrastructure. NBN Co has acknowledged the strong community advocacy in Gungahlin, and said “given the history of broadband problems the community has experienced with RIM technology, Gungahlin was a clear choice for an ACT site.” Congratulations to the Gungahlin Community Council and ACT Broadband who have campaigned on this issue. Early selection for NBN rollout is a great solution for Gungahlin’s Internet issues, and I am proud to have strongly represented this community issue in Parliament for over 14 years.
Internet improvement:
This project will deliver a 100 megabits per second Internet service to retail providers, which is 50 times faster than what most people experience today. This service will not have the latency or congestion issues that many people in Gungahlin currently deal with on the old RIM infrastructure.
Who:
3000 premises will have fibre connected for this phase of the project (Q2 2011). Specific locations will be chosen after NBN Co consultations with the local authorities.
My office will be working with NBN Co, Gungahlin Community Council and other community organisations to pass feedback to NBN Co, so please contact my office if you would like to be notified.
The National Broadband Network will be rolled out to all Australians over 8 years, with at least 90% of Australians connected by a 100 mbps fibre connection, and the remaining (particularly in remote areas) by a 12 mbps satellite/wireless connection.
When:
The rollout will commence in the second quarter of 2011, after consultation with local authorities.
Cost and delivery:
This rollout is being funded by government. It will deliver a 100 megabits per second service to your home that you can purchase through a retail Internet Service Provider as you currently do for Internet access.
