Migration the backbone of Australia’s prosperity

Australia’s well-managed migration program has contributed to the ongoing success and prosperity of our nation, the Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Senator Kate Lundy, said today during an address to the Migration Institute of Australia conference in Sydney.

“Australia has been enriched by the contribution of successive waves of migrants,” Senator Lundy said.

“Generations of new migrants have peacefully settled in Australia, driving the ongoing economic, social and cultural growth of our nation and adding vibrant layers to the fabric of our communities.

“Australia’s world class settlement services invest in the future potential of our nation and are geared to assist new migrants successfully settle in Australia and develop the knowledge and skills they need to fully participate in the community.

“These services leverage the strength of our diversity – enabling new migrants to flourish and ensuring Australia can continue to prosper.”

The Gillard Government is committed to policies and programs that support Australia’s diversity and the new national National Anti-Racism Strategy demonstrates our continued opposition to all forms of racism, discrimination, intolerance and prejudice.

“The Australian Government will continue to work with community partners including schools and higher education institutions, the media, government service providers, and workplaces to combat racism in our communities,” Senator Lundy said.

“Racism discounts people’s contribution to our nation, locking them out of social and economic opportunities and entrenching disadvantage.

“By addressing racism in the community, we are ensuring we can continue to capitalise on the strength of our diversity and prosper as a nation.”
