Time for Humphries to take a real stand for Canberra

ACT Senator Kate Lundy today said that regardless of who wins the Liberal Senate pre-selection ballot, Canberrans should be worried about what will happen if a Tony Abbott led Government is elected later this year.

“Gary Humphries, in putting himself forward as the better Senate Candidate for the Liberal Party has acknowledged the ‘challenge’ facing the people of Canberra in the next three years, particularly if there is a change of government,” Senator Lundy said.

“He says that ‘Canberra is going to be facing heavy pressures and will be subject to tough decisions of an incoming government’ and that ‘Canberra will need a champion, a person who is prepared to act as an advocate for the city’,” Senator Lundy
recapped.

“On the one hand he is advocating a Liberal led government, and on the other hand, he is telling Canberrans that he will be their protector should we have a change in government.”

“Our ACT economy can’t stand another slash and burn response from a Liberal led Federal Government.  Last time a Liberal government was elected, Canberra went into recession as a result of the job cuts.” she said.

“If Gary Humphries is so worried about Canberra and the future under a Liberal Abbott Government, then why hasn’t he put up a believable fight against Abbott’s plan to axe 20,000 jobs in Canberra,” Senator Lundy concluded.
