The Declaration of Open Government

Today Minister Tanner launched the Australian Declaration of Open Government on the AGIMO Govspace website.
The Declaration was one of the core recommendations of the Gov 2.0 Taskforce Report (the Government response is here), and it includes some good key principles for Open Government in the 21st century which I’ve quoted below:
The Australian Government’s support for [...]

100 years of the Garden City

Canberra celebrated it’s 97th birthday on 12 March 2010, meaning the Centenary while still 3 years away. This has not stopped the ACT Government and Chief Minister Jon Stanhope making sure we clearly mark each milestone towards this event.
For example, on Friday 12 March, the Centenary of Canberra’s Creative Director, Robyn Archer, introduced the new [...]

Prime Minister Gillard on Asylum Seekers

Many people have asked me about Federal Labor’s approach to asylum seekers. My best advice is to read this speech by the Prime Minister in the first instance.  If you would like further updates, please visit the Minister’s website here: http://www.minister.immi.gov.au/ or visit the PM’s web site http://www.pm.gov.au/

2010 Vinnies CEO Sleepout

I was proud to join 111 Canberra CEOs and 681 CEOs nationwide in the 2010 Vinnies CEO Sleepout.
It was the first time the CEO Sleepout was held in Canberra, after the event’s success in Sydney last year when 200 business leaders slept out and raised $602,000 in funds.
The aim of the Vinnies CEO Sleepout is [...]

OLPC Oceania update and chance meeting with Gartner’s Andrea Di Maio

Some days just work out right. Last Thursday week was one of them.
Early in the day, I bumped into Glenn Archer, the CIO of DEEWR whilst walking in Parliament House who mentioned Andrea Di Maio was in Canberra for the day. I asked Glenn if he could ask whether we could arrange a meeting at [...]

Live chat with The Australian about Gov 2.0

Today I participated in a “live blog” about Gov 2.0. The topic was Gov 2.0, and I had over 170 questions posted. With the hour given, I was only able to respond to about 65 questions, so I’ve put a full transcript, with some additional questions answered below (marked with ADDITIONAL RESPONSE). I have included [...]

My thoughts on an opt-in filter

As I have indicated in several blog posts, I am working to change the Internet filtering policy to better achieve the policy goals of protecting children through empowering and educating parents. I have spoken before about the two key amendments I am advocating, ie: a) protect in legislation the availability of an unfiltered, open Internet [...]

ACTA: DMCA Mark II?

We are entering the information age, where economies are built on the back of digital infrastructure. This ensures the full spectrum of ICT related policy, from Gov2.0 to growing ICT exports is more important than ever.
We need to make sure our capacity to innovate and collaborate with ICT is harnessed to strengthen our exports. It [...]

RSPT: the Facts v Liberal’s fiction

Update: A deal was secured on the 2nd July 2010.
Yesterday morning on the regular political panel segment on ABC Canberra 666 Breakfast with Ross Solly, the extent of the Liberals shameless departure from the truth was exposed during the debate about the impact of Labor’s proposed resources super-profits tax (RSPT).
I want to make sure that [...]
