23 June 2004 - Labor secures residents bushfire memorial and York Park Oak Trees

This is a copy of the Public statement made by the Joint Standing Committee on the National Capital and External Territories following my raising concerns about this issue.

Wednesday 23rd June

Committee opposes removal of oak trees in York Park

Federal Parliament’s National Capital Committee notes that the Department of Finance and Administration has made a submission to the Department of the Environment and Heritage seeking the Environment Minister’s approval for the sale of York Park North in accordance with the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

Given the significant heritage value of the oak tree plantation, the Committee is opposed to any development on the site that would prejudice the survival of the plantation in its entirety.

The Committee has called on the Minister to abandon any plans that will impact directly on the plantation and examine other options for development in the northern part of York Park.

For media comment, contact Committee Chairman, Senator Ross Lightfoot, on tel: (02) 6277 3626

For further information, contact the Inquiry Secretary, Mr Quinton Clements, in the Committee secretariat, on tel: (02) 6277 2135
