Labor senator Doug Cameron and left-winger Kate Lundy co-authored an amendment in yesterday’s caucus meeting to make coercive powers occur only in “opt in” cases rather than have blanket application.
Three amendments designed to further soften the legislation had been proposed by former union chief Doug Cameron and ACT senator Kate Lundy, but all three amendments were defeated.
The debate inside caucus has been described as passionate and constructive. Twenty-one MPs spoke – seven in favour of a proposal by Doug Cameron and Kate Lundy to change the bill to water some elements down; but in the end the Deputy Prime Minister says it came through unscathed.
Labor sources later described the debate as passionate and constructive, with two former unionists, senators Kate Lundy and Doug Cameron, failing in an attempt to reduce the sunset clause to three years and to introduce an “opt in” clause for the coercive powers.
